Travelling and visiting family for the holidays is so much fun. Get away from your usual day in and day out routines. Making awesome memories with family and friends. Then the re-entry and returning home. Having to deal with the mess with all the laundry, trying to get the house in order and get back to routine. Feels almost impossible sometimes and often takes a few days. But it doesn't have too.
Here are three steps that help you make that re-entry with out the chaos and mess!
First, it's all in the prep work! By prep work, I'm talking about taking time to clean the house before you leave. Yes, it adds a bit to your plate, but it is so worth the effort!
Clean out the fridge,
Empty all the garbage bins,
Make all the beds with fresh linens,
Put all the laundry away (that you aren't taking with you on your trip),
Wash and put away your linens.
Wipe down all surfaces.
Vacuum the floors.
This does multiple things. Removes chances of you coming home to a house full of bugs. No rotted food to smell up the fridge. And everything in it's place. So less for you to do when you return.
Second, have wash bags for each person who is travelling with you. These are amazing for regular days! They keep each person's clothes contained. No more lost socks. No more broken bra clasps or delicates being ripped up in the wash. Makes sorting clothes simple too! As my kids are a bit older, I just toss their bags into their rooms and they put their own things away. (Want to see which one I use? Here is the link to My Favorite Things. The bags are under Household)
Third, when you return from your trip immediately clean it! With the pandemic, any travel means you need to sanitize everything before you let it in your home. This means your luggage, all clothing items, your purse and bags, toys, cups, everything you had with you while you travelled.
Luggage: immediately, as you pull the bags from the trunk, wipe them down.
Clothing and items within the luggage, soft toys. Open all the bags and immediately put all clothing items (hopefully still sorted in your wash bags) into the washer. Wipe down everything else and put it all away. Yes, the kids and spouse can help with this (even if it is at 10pm at night). It's to keep you all safe!
Hard Toys, cups. These pop into the dishwasher.
Shower. Go shower and get your trip off of you.
Hydrate. Get some water! Travelling is so dehydrating. Doing this will help stave off headaches and jetlag / travel-lag.
I know that sounds like a lot, but really it is just tossing everything into the wash and getting everyone and everything reset.
The next day, it's back to normal routine! You won't have the fallout of having to then pick up from the trip. It's all done! Yes, you'll probably be a bit tired, but overall you are ready to get back to it all. But the joy of looking around with your already cleaned house, and the trip memories the only thing left of your trip! Priceless!
Try it out and report back how it worked for you!
